Rammana is a deeply personal journey, weaving together the sounds of Northeast Thailand with the psychedelic soul of 1970s West Africa, all filtered through Salin's distinct modern production ear. Inspired by the traditional drum and folk songs of the Urak Lawoi, an indigenous nomadic island tribe, Salin's album is a celebration of musical migration and exchange of East and West. "With Rammana, I aimed to weave together some of my biggest musical influences," Salin explains. "I built the foundation on African rhythms, recognizing them as our original roots, and was obsessed by it's polyrhythms. I then layered in the syncopated line of Thai Funk and jazzy chords to infuse them with traditional Thai musical elements, giving you what I call Afro-Thai Funk. Salin's journey to Rammana began with travels to Koh Lanta, off the coast of Krabi province, where she immersed herself in the musical traditions of the Urak Lawoi. Learning directly from the elder Urak Lawoi musicians, she discovered a connection between the Rammana drum and the tribe's traditional spiritual celebrations.
