David "Fathead Newman", Ellis Marsalis and Cornell Dupree along with James Clay, Leroy Cooper, Dennis Dotson, Chuck Rainey and George Rains join forces to make a live recording. The music combines elements of jazz and r&b indigenous to Texas. Recorded at the Caravan of Dreams in Ft. Worth, TX. What makes this title important? A unique gathering of jazz/r&b musician greats. This recording was released Oct. 1, 1990 on Amazing Records. In 1991, great reviews started coming in from major publications across the USA. The record won the N.A.I.R.D. Traditional Jazz Album of the Year in 1991. The record also charted on the BIllboard Jazz charts. Released only on CD, "Return to the Wide Open Spaces" has never enjoyed a vinyl release.
